Winter Vacation

I was lucky enough to get the plus one to a fabulous wedding in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico at the beginning of December. To be honest, Cabo was never high on my list of must-see travel destinations but after spending five sun-filled days there I could easily make it an annual trip! There is rarely a cloudy day, Dirty Monkeys and margaritas are the drinks of choice, the mix of desert and ocean scenery is surreal, and eating Mexican food for every meal is totally legit!

Although I think Mexican flair can boarder on kitschy at times, I absolutely adore the colorful Oaxaca-style textiles and fabrics.  I picked up a beautiful peach embroidered table runner while south of the boarder, and am carefully plotting a party in the near future to put it to use.

Here are a number of Mexican inspirations from my personal archives and the recipe to the Dirty Monkey (aka Banana Special, Dirty Money, and Banana Cognac) – enjoy!

Dirty Monkey Recipe

1 oz rum or vodka
1 oz creme de bananes
1 oz creme de cacao
1 oz Kahlua® coffee liqueur
2 scoops vanilla ice cream or milk

Blend six ice cubes with ice-cream in a blender until smooth. Add liqueurs and continue blending, again until smooth. Add more ice-cream if needed (for milk-shake consistency). Pour into a highball glass, and serve.

  1. You’re way more than just a plus one!…I WILL NOT wait at the airport early and watch people pawn cheap Jesus statues off on me.

  2. Loving the mexican kitsch! Sydney is all about mexican inspired stuff right now and its considered so exotic. I was at a street market and they were selling super cheap mesh mexican-patterned bags for $30 apiece! I was like “dudes, this is NOT a deal!”
